Pieces For Piano Vol. 2 marks the second volume in the piano series from Chris Child, making a deliberate return to the roots of musical storytelling.

Known for his IDM infused electronic music under Kodomo, Child redirects his attention to the art of restrained composition. The album emerges from a desire for simplicity, a reconnection with the piano’s emotional resonance. “These compositions are akin to diary entries,” explains Child. This intimate approach contrasts starkly with the ambient, synthesizer-infused soundscapes of the series’ inaugural volume. Pieces like “Unravel” and “Etude In F minor” unfurl with unexpected intensity, embracing compelling structures that command attention. These compositions pay homage to the rich legacy of western classical music while seamlessly embracing contemporary influences.

Pieces For Piano Vol. 2 was recorded at Samurai Hotel Studios in Queens, New York, on a Steinway D grand piano from 1909. Pianist Yuri Matsufuji breathes life into each piece, delivering a soulful interpretation.

As a hobby musician I was well aware of Puremagnetik’s fantastic Ableton sounds and plugins. Somehow I never explored Puremagnetik - the label. But now I have corrected that wrong. And boy… it feels I have just opened a treasure chest. I absolutely adore the aesthetic on this Tape Pieces trilogy. It has that “the tapemachine broke” ambient quality but does maintain a certain pulse as well. I was positively reminded of the 1980s Holger Czukay albums too. Lovely music.
